The DISCUS THROWER by Myron
The Discus Thrower
also known as:
Discobolos, Diskobolos, or Discobolus
by Myron, circa 450 B.C.E.
National Museum of Rome, Excavated in 1781.
The Greek artist Myron made this magnificent statue in bronze, and as with almost every other bronze statue from ancient Greek times -- it disappeared in antiquity. Bronze statues were too valuable as metals. Copies of the bronze statues were made in marble and then the original bronse statues were melted down and made into other useful objects, such as swords.

The ancient Romans knew this statue very well -- it was famous throughout the ancient world. Roman artists made copies if the Discus Thrower in marble. Several Roman copies have survived. All of them have been damaged in some way, with broken arms and heads, pieces missing, etc. The statues were buried over centuries of passing time. Statuary all over Greece and Italy was dug up beginning in the 1700's. The image above is the only marble copy that has survived with the original head intact. and is currently in the statuary collection of the National Museum of Rome. Three other ancient Roman marble copies of the Discus Thrower are known to exist. Two are in the Vatican Museum in Rome and one in the British Museum in London. The IISOH plans to acquire copies of each statue for our Museum collection.
